What are the Types of Injectable Fillers.

There are many types of injectable fillers, which are divided into 3 broad categories.

Temporary Fillers

Most temporary fillers are made of a naturally occurring substance containing hyaluronic acid ( natural sugar in the skin). They last from about 3- 9 months, depending on the thickness of the product and the location in which it is placed.

Temporary fillers are suitable for

Fine lines around the mouth and eyes
Nasolabial folds

Hollows under the eyes
Hollows in the cheeks
Acne scars
Frown lines

There are few risks associated with temporary fillers. If an area is overcorrected, an injection can be used to reverse the effects.

Semi permanent Fillers

Semipermanent fillers often last 12-18months. They are also made of naturally occurring substances, but are more durable and take longer for the body to break them down.

They are suitable for:

Nasolabial folds

Cheek enhancement

Deeper lines below the mouth

Acne scars

Semipermanent fillers need to be injected more deeply and are not suited for fine lines or lip enhancement.

Although semipermanent fillers are generally safe, there is some risk of lumpiness, especially if injected too superficially.

Permanent Fillers

Permanent fillers last for years and are made of synthetic plastic like liquids. The body does not break down these fillers, and they cannot be easily removed.

Permanent fillers can be used for

Nasolabial folds
Lip enhancement
Cheek enhancement
Depressions below the mouth

Deeper depressions on the face.

Permanent fillers are permanent, so once injected cannot be removed. It is therefore important to initially under correct the area.

It is also recommended that a temporary filler is used first to see whether you like the effects of the filler before a permanent fillers is used.

Permanent fillers must be injected deeply to avoid lumpiness. Usually antibiotics are also recommended to avoid infection.

Do Fillers hurt?

Fillers are often acidic so can sting when injected. To minimise any discomfort, it is possible to use ice, a numbing cream or local anaesthetic injections, prior to insertion of the filler.

What can be expected after the injections?

After injection of fillers, it is possible to have some swelling and bruising, which may last a few days. It is particularly common around the eye area. If you use ice immediately after the filler, it may reduce bruising and swelling.

What are the side effects of fillers?

There are few side effects with fillers nowadays. However the following may occur:

Inadequate filling.
Bruising and swelling
Infection
Asymmetry
