Laser Treatments

There are many different lasers for skin abnormalities.  These include:

1. Laser treatment Red Veins, Birthmarks, Red scars.

There are a variety of laser that can reduce or remove red scars, veins and marks. Pulsed Light is also commonly used for treating red lesions.

2. Laser treatment Brown Marks

Brown pigmentation, freckles, sun spots, brown birthmarks can be reduced with lasers eg Q switched Nd:YAG,  Alexandrite laser and Intense Pulsed Light. Superficial pigmentation is easier to treat and uses shorter wavelengths of light. Deeper brown marks and more difficult and require often several treatment session.

3. Laser Hair removal

Several lasers eg Alexandrite, long pulse Nd:YAG can successfully reduce hair growth. Intense Pulsed Light is also used. In all cases, many treatment sessions (at least 6) are needed to remove most hairs. Generally all lasers work best for darker hairs with lighter skin. White hairs generally don’t respond to lasers or Pulsed Light. Often lasers are more efficient than pulsed light at removing coarse dark hairs, and require fewer treatment sessions.

6. Laser Wrinkles Reduction (Laser Resurfacing)

Lasers eg Erbium , carbon dioxide and non lasers eg Plasma Portrait PSR can significantly reduce facial wrinkles in one treatment session. Fractionated lasers eg Fraxel can produce modest improvement in wrinkles but need several treatment session.

7. Laser treatment Acne Scarring and other Scars.

The treatment of Acne scarring has been revolutionised with the Fractionated lasers eg Fraxel, often achieving 60-80% improvement in 4-5 treatment session. These lasers are non invasive, safe with little down time. The fraxel is also useful for other scars on the face and body.

4. Laser Tattoo Removal

Lasers eg Q switched: YAG can successfully remove black and red tattoo pigments. Multiple treatment sessions are needed. Green tattoo pigment responds poorly.

5. Laser Lipolysis (fat reduction)

Laser lipolysis is a refinement in Liposuction leading to permanent reduction of localised fatty deposits. Laser fibers melt the fat, which is later removed and then the laser heat shrinks the overlying skin to produce a smoother contour. It is a one off, outpatient procedure.


8. Stretch Marks

Stretch marks cannot be completely eliminated with any laser treatment, but they can be modified. Red stretch marks can be reduced with vascular lasers and Intense Pulsed Light treatment. White stretch marks can be improved with Fraxel laser, but usually many treatment sessions are needed.

9. Light Treatments

Light treatments are useful for treating sunspots and skin cancers (Photodynamic therapy). This involves the use of a cream followed by yellow, blue or red light.

This treatment can be used for treating acne and rosacea.

Intense Pulsed Light is used to treat, redness, red veins, red scars and red stretch marks. It is used for treating brown marks, pigmentation, and freckles.

10. Fractionated CO2 Laser
