What is cellulite and why does it occur?
Cellulite is the irregularity and dimpling seen in fatty areas e.g. thighs and buttocks. It is caused by localized excess fatty deposits that bulge between more rigid fibrous strands. It may occur due to the following reasons:
- Genetic
The commonest cause of cellulite is genetic factors. Some people are genetically programmed to store fat selectively in certain areas.
- Diet
Being overweight allows existing fat cells to expand leading to irregularities. Low carbohydrate diets and weight reduction helps.
- Exercise
Resistance exercise i.e, weight training will increase muscle mass and burn up fat leading to a reduction in cellulite.
What measures can help in cellulite reduction?
- Diet
Low carbohydrate, high protein diet will help to reduce fat.
- Exercise
Resistance and aerobic exercise will reduce fatty deposits.
- Fat Dissolve
A new technique where fatty areas are injected with vitamins and certain other agents will help to increase the breakdown of fat cells. Fatty acids are released which are destroyed by the body. Fatty acids also lead to inflammation in overlying skin which makes the skin “shrink”.
- Laser Lipolysis
Laser fiber is inserted into fat which melts fat and tightens skin. This is useful for small localized fatty deposits eg. neck, hips and tummy.
Weight loss dietary advice
All weight loss and fat reduction treatments recommended at Dr. Skin Clinics must be part of an overall dietary and lifestyle plan.
We suggest a diet that is low in calories, high in protein, with moderate amounts of good fats and some complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates eg. bread, pasta and rice are best avoided.
A mixture of aerobic, or cardiovascular activity, eg. brisk walking, running, swimming, cycling, aerobics; and anaerobic or resistance activity, eg. lifting weights, for 30-45 minutes, 3-5 times/week is ideal.
PROTEIN is the essential building block of your body, and makes up muscles, bones, skin etc. The best sources of protein are fish, chicken without the skin, and lean red meat. Vegetarian sources include legumes, beans and lentils; tofu and low-fat cheese and milk. Protein supplements often contain whey protein, which is derived from milk. A good amount of protein per meal is about the size of the palm of your hand. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and some amino acids, such as CARNITINE help fat to be metabolized and used up as an energy source.
FAT is essential for brain and nervous tissue function, hormones and healthy skin. It is common mistake in thinking that to lose weight you must have no fat in the diet. In fact, some fat is essential. But it is the good fats, the UNsaturated fats, such as in olive and sunflower oils and in nuts, and in fish oil that is very important for health. The fish oils are the best source of omega 3 oils which are very important for your health. And it is important to decrease the saturated fat in your diet. This includes most processed baked goods, such as cakes and biscuits, all fast foods and take-aways. Red meat has quite a lot of saturated fat compared to fish and chicken.
CARBOHYDRATES provide the energy or fuel for your body. Sugar is an example of a simple carbohydrate, which is very quickly converted into energy and fat. All sugar should be avoided. It is better to eat COMPLEX carbohydrates that are more slowly converted and have less chance of being converted into fat. These complex carbohydrates, in general, have a low GLYCAEMIC INDEX. They are also a source of dietary fibre, which is important for good bowel function. Foods with more fibre also tend to make you feel more full after eating.
And some wine in moderation, and green tea are amongst some of the beverages that are very good for health. Caffeine intake should be reduced and don't forget to drink lots of water.
